Internship Program
Overview of program:
McClain Marketing Group’s summer internship program affords undergraduates from across the country the opportunity to intern at one of our two offices in Portland, Maine and New York City. This ten-week program provides knowledge in account management, creative, media, interactive, new media and production. Interns will have the opportunity to interact with experts from every aspect of the advertising field through practices that explore each area of the business.Interns can expect to see first hand what it takes to create an ad campaign, learn the intricacies of developing a brand strategy, map out a media plan, research a product category, plan an online presence, coordinate strategy and development of interactive media or create a collateral package. Interns are also paired with a senior manager who will act as a mentor throughout the program.
Internships are available to students at the undergraduate level who are going into their junior or senior year.
Who's eligible:
Ambitious, motivated, self-starting, creative, high-energy people who value real-world experience and aren’t afraid of a little hard work.
What’s it like living/working in Portland/New York City?
Our Portland, Maine office sits at the base of historic Munjoy Hill on the edge of Portland’s seaside downtown. Culture, entertainment and excitement are just some of the many lucrative perks of living in Portland. Our Manhattan office is located in the fashion-forward Flat Iron District on 5th Avenue, surrounded by a creative culture and non-stop activity.
What’s it like to work in a small agency?
The atmosphere is quite different from most large agencies. At McClain, every project starts and ends with a team of people who each bring their specific area(s) of expertise to the table. This is a team environment by all means; no one is a backroom worker at this agency. We work for a first-class and diverse list of clients that continues to grow on a regular basis, ensuring that boredom does not have its place in our offices. We are constantly working with new clients on strategic branding, advertising, web design and graphic design. We wear a lot of hats, and you will too!
Anything else?
Every opportunity comes with its own set of hardships. In both cities, housing, food and transportation are expensive. You won't be compensated monetarily or covered by our health insurance policy, but you will receive college credit (if applicable) and be invited to join in on all of our in-office and after-work activities.
The ‘serious’ stuff:
Goals:Interns will develop and establish a thorough understanding of the basic inner-workings of a marketing agency.
Time Frame:
Scheduling will be flexible, although 10 weeks will be required to receive a recommendation and/or credit. Interns will be required to work a minimum of 15 hours/wk.
Selection Process:
Candidates for McClain’s 2010 internship program must possess the following qualifications:
· Minimum of 2 years in an undergraduate educational setting.
· Minor/Major must be in marketing, communications and/or similar discipline.
· Motivated to be part of a team
Key Players & Roles:
Employees at McClain will be responsible for handling specific tasks within the internship program. Each employee will bring their individual strengths to the table, demonstrating their roles at McClain to interns in the following capacities:
· Bob Perkins – Creative Process
· Patrick Krulik – Graphic Design
· Kristen Jensen – Account Service & Media Planning
· Paul Engel – Public Relations
· Sue-Ellen McClain – Strategy
· Erik Neilson – Print Production & Office Management

Each intern will be paired with a member of the McClain team who will serve as a mentor, advisor and everything in between. Please note that interns in the NY office will experience a program much heavier on interactive/web than those in Portland
Organization:
As no one account follows the same linear path, employees will be responsible for involving interns whenever they feel their skills are coachable. During downtime, interns will be expected to spend their time researching the industry and examining the literature. Interns will also be tapped for “field trips” (ie: client meetings, trips to The Studio etc.) whenever possible. Interns must log a minimum of 8 hours in time in each discipline in order to “graduate” from the program.
Each new intern will undergo a brief orientation at the start of the program in which Erik Neilson, Production & Office Manager, will explain the flow of the agency, introduce all employees & their roles and explain the Internship program in full.
